Statenweg 178b Rotterdam
Mozes Maarssen was born on September 10, 1895 in Rotterdam in a large family. He has four sisters and five brothers. He is a good student and has degrees in English and accounting. He starts working in the office and eventually rises to become chief of office, broker and agent of the Rotterdam Mortgage Bank. On August 12, 1920, at the age of 24, he married the 22-year-old Clara van Cleef and they had two daughters. It is unclear exactly when the family will settle on Statenweg 178B, but in any case after 1938, because that is when these houses will be delivered. Clara was born on April 24, 1898 in Amsterdam. Her father Jacob van Cleef was already married at the age of 18 to her mother Christiana Suikerman who was 29 at the time. They had two children, first Joseph and then Clara, but the marriage was unsuccessful and less than a year after Clara's birth, her parents divorced. Her father was 23 years old at the time. Business is also not going well at home. Her father earned a living as a dealer in bicycles and other goods, but went bankrupt. When Clara is two years old, her father leaves with the two children for Rotterdam where he lives with his father and stepmother. Clara's mother stays in Amsterdam and dies when Clara is four years old. Clara is largely raised by her grandparents, because her father had all kinds of businesses, was absent a lot and later also remarried. After primary school, she goes through the 4-year-old secondary school and finds work as a secretary / shorthand typist. On August 12, 1920, at the age of 22, she married Mozes Maarssen. A year later they have a daughter who they name Christiana Isaaca after her own mother and the mother of Mozes. Three years later, the second daughter Isaaca Clara follows. When the family finally arrives at Camp Vught on April 22, 1943, Clara is almost 45 years old. She can stay in Vught, because her husband has to work there. But with him and her youngest daughter Isaaca Clara, she is deported on June 7 to go via Westerbork to the Sobibor extermination camp. She also died there immediately upon arrival on June 11, 1943. The eldest daughter of Mozes and Clara was born on September 2, 1921. Little is known about her, but a cheerful photo of Christiana and her husband Benjamin Huisman has been preserved. Their wedding date is unknown, but they must have been married young, because she is only 21 years old when she dies - on the same day as her husband - in Sobibor extermination camp in Poland. Benjamin - Ben - Huisman was born on February 12, 1922 as the eldest son of Salomon - Karel - Huisman and Jeannette Mok. He is the oldest; he has a younger brother Henri - Hans - and a younger sister Sophia. The youngest daughter of Mozes and Clara is born on May 30, 1924 in Rotterdam. So she is almost 16 when the war starts and the bombing has reduced a large part of Rotterdam to ashes. She was probably still in school.
