Markt 13 Assen
The Stern family consisted of father Aron, mother Henriëtte and children Sam (1919) and Eva (1921). The Stern family lived in Assen in the Julianastraat. Then they moved to Kerkstraat and then they moved again to the Markt, to a property that Aron Stern bought in 1928. There they had a dance school annex dancing, an occasion where people could dance mostly in the evening. Father Aron had a double task: during the day he worked as a representative for a shoe company in Brabant. Sam and Eva went to the public primary school on the Emmastraat in Assen. Sam went to Jewish class. Son Sam was supposed to take over the dance school. After MULO he trained as a dance teacher. Sam played the piano in the band "The Rhythm Four". Eva worked as a student nurse in the Dutch-Israeli men's and women's home in Amsterdam. She married Heiman Magnus in Amsterdam on February 26, 1943. When son Sam Stern was employed, war broke out in May 1940. Sam Stern was then in Bergen (Noord-Holland). In the morning they heard the drone of airplanes, they thought the English came to their aid. But it was not. They were Germans. They bombed and fired machine guns. Shortly after the surrender, the soldiers were given short leave and could go home. Sam Stern returned to his parents Aron Stern and Henriëtte Stern van Rhijn, in the building on the market. Gradually, the family realized that the Nazis had plans for the Jews. Anti-Jewish measures became stricter. At a certain moment, father Aron was summoned to the German Sicherheidsdienst. Mother and children never thought to see him again, but he returned anyway. He said that he was told to stop teaching dance and to stop running the company. The Jewish Council advised the Stern family to look for other work, otherwise they risked being arrested. They turned their business into a lunchroom, where only Jews were allowed to come. In early 1942, father Aron received a call to report for employment in the Jewish labor camp Orvelte. There he was employed in the kitchen. Then Sam received a call through the police. He had to report on Monday morning, August 17, 1942, at 7:30 am at the station in Assen. Sam was transported to the labor camp in Ruinen. Immediately the next day he was transferred to camp Westerbork. In camp Westerbork Sam worked at the cleaning service and later in the hospital. Aron and Henriëtte were taken to Westerbork transit camp on 2 October 1942. They were deported to Auschwitz in February 1943. Aron was murdered on February 18, 1943, he was 56 years old. Henriette was also murdered on February 18, 1943, she was 49 years old. Eva worked in the Israelite Hospital in Amsterdam, she lived at 135 Nieuwe Kerkstraat. In the spring of 1943, Eva was transferred to camp Westerbork. Eva was ill for a while in Westerbork transit camp and was also hospitalized. In January 1944, Eva and her husband Heiman were deported to Theresienstadt, from there to Auschwitz and from there to Bergen Belsen. Heiman died in April 1945, Eva died at the age of 24 on 20 May 1945 in Bergen Belsen from exhaustion, typhus and dysentery. Son Sam, who survived the war, has seen his family in Westerbork transit camp. Sam Stern: "I have seen my parents, who I saw passing by from the barrack opposite when they had to go to the train. But I did not attend the train myself. I think I still have them, just talked before. Yes, because it was actually so, I actually wanted to go with them. And then my parents said "You are not going, you are not allowed to come, you are not allowed to come, because you have to make sure that when your sister comes to Westerbork, that you take care of it." That's the reason. Otherwise I might have gone if my sister had already been caught. Good thing that's been it. But I did speak to them before the train, but not on the platform, say. "
