Rachel (Chelly) Cohen Rodrigues was an afterthought, the fifth child of Abraham Cohen Rodrigues and Flora Winnink, for whom we laid stumbling blocks at President Steijnstraat 99rd. On April 1, 1942 she married Cherlok Peper (1919), son of Jacob Peper and Dirkje Maria Baruch. Cherlok was also an afterthought, in an even larger family than Rachel. In the fall of 1941, Cherlok came to live with Rachel and her parents. Was he already her lover then or just a tenant?

In any case, the young couple gives the impression that they have not allowed themselves to be dictated to by the law. On the day of their wedding, Rachel and Cherlok moved into the house at Rijksstraatweg 154, without caring about the ban on moving Jews. That quickly led to police attention. But that will not be the reason why Rachel was arrested a few months later, on June 17, 1942, on behalf of the SD from Amsterdam, together with Siene Verboom-Franken and Manus van Praag. We think she and Cherlok were active in socialist or even communist circles. In any case, it was not (at that time) because of her Jewish origins, the order for the persecution of the Jews was only given later that summer. Rachel saw the inside of the prison on Nieuwe Doelenstraat and later the Oranjehotel in Scheveningen, before being sent to the Ravensbrück women's camp in early September together with Siene Verboom. From there she was sent to Auschwitz a month later, probably because of her Jewish origins, and murdered there on October 12.

Cherlok received news of her death from Auschwitz on October 29. That was reason for him to leave the Rijksstraatweg and return to his mother in the Zuidpolderstraat. In the spring of 1943 he then left – in the middle of wartime – for Riga “to learn communism”, as a family member wrote. He took part in the battle there and was killed on April 25, 1944, according to a grave monument a little outside Riga.
