Grotestraat 77 Almelo
Resistance man from the very beginning, confectioner at the Grotestraat 77. Together with Gerritsen from Hengelo, he was the leading figure of the Resistance Group Twente. With good faith in the traitors Willy Kramer and Sophie Maschkov-Menso, he involves these people in transferring soldiers to England and relocating Jews. These two traitors, together with Untersturmfuhrer Blaese, rob all soldiers and Jews of their possessions. When they are put on hold, they betray Mr. Prinsen, and with him the hiding places of the Braam family, doctor Silvergieter-Hoogstad, doctor de Gruyter, family van der Aa, family W. Nauta, family J. Meesters and family Hermelink. 26 February 1942 Gerrit Jan Prinsen is arrested by SDérs. Together with Gerritsen, Meesters, Hermelink, Braam, de Gruyter and Silvergieter-Hoogstad, they are locked up in “Oranje Hotel”, the infamous prison in Scheveningen, where they are tried to face the death penalty. Many will later be pardoned, this does not apply to five executives. Gerrit Jan Prinsen was executed on November 19, 1942 in Soesterberg together with M.C. Cavalje, C.W.R. Wilmink, B. Veenstra and H.M. Moquette. Jan Meesters from Almelo died on 15 October 1943 in Neuengamme. Albert Hermelink from Almelo died in the night of 5 to 6 September 1944 during transport from Natzweiler camp to Dachau. Doctor W.A. de Gruyter from Almelo died on December 11, 1944 in Siegburg. Gerard Hemmer from Geesteren died on 5 February 1945 in Dachau W. Nauta experienced the liberation, but died on 2 May 1945 in Dachau. He was very weakened by the typhus and had starvation edema. On September 3, 1960 he was reburied on the plot in Loenen. Mr. Silvergieter-Hoogstad is one of the few who survived captivity.
