Kerkstraat 47 Hattem
On Monday, April 2, 1945, Easter Monday, Spring finally seemed to make its appearance after a strict Hunger Winter. The inhabitants of Hattem felt the approaching liberation, but the threat of the occupier was still present. The curfew was still in force. Marinus Rorije lived with his wife Maria de Ruiter and their two children, Riek and Albert, temporarily in Kerkstraat. This was because their house on the Geldersedijk became too dangerous to live due to the strategic location near the IJssellinie. That evening Maria's sister, Nella de Ruiter, visited the family. During her visit there were shots in the city. Nella became anxious and insecure and did not just dare to go to her house in the Allee. At ten to eight, she decided to leave because of the curfew. Marinus offered to guide her a bit, together with his children. They ran to the Nieuwstad, after which Nella went home safely and Marinus returned with his children. The curfew had started. At that time, Field Guard Reeder and Landwachter A.C. De Haan approached from the market. Marinus, aware of the danger, lifted his three -year -old daughter Riek to be able to walk faster, while his nine -year -old son Albert walked across the street. Suddenly, gunshots sounded. Marinus was hit. Marinus was fatally injured in front of the vegetable store of Agterhuis in the Kerkstraat. Municipality of Arts Mesdag arrived quickly, but couldn't do anything for him anymore. Marinus died of his injuries around 9.30 p.m. He was only 32 years old.
