Coralie Debusschere lived with her husband Frederik (‘Frits’) Spriet at Nijverheidsstraat 15 in Roeselare. During the Second World War, they were both active in the resistance, in the resistance group Geheim Leger (Secret Army). They gathered intelligence, acted as couriers and carried out acts of sabotage.
In July 1943, Frédéric Spriet was arrested and deported to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp. He died there on 26 December 1944. After his arrest, Coralie took over the leadership of the local group. She continued to evade the German occupiers and carried on the resistance work with courage and determination.
Coralie died in 1978, at the age of 70. She survived the war, but remained one of the silent heroes of Roeselare forever.
