Dr. Winfried Selbiger was a Jewish physician born in 1906 near Weimar. After studying medicine in Munich, where he earned his doctorate in 1930, he opened a medical practice in Büttgen at today’s Rathausplatz 15. From 1932 to 1933 he worked there as a family doctor. Under Nazi rule he was denounced by local citizens, arrested and later banned from practicing medicine. Forced to emigrate, he went to Tanzania, where he worked for several years as a mission doctor. In 1954 he returned to Germany, but his life had been deeply damaged by persecution. He died in 1961 under circumstances that remain unclear.
