Jakob Kennerknecht was born on July 25, 1895, in St. Ingbert. He trained as a miner and joined the SPD and the Free Miners' Union in 1918, becoming a strong advocate for workers' rights and international understanding. He rose quickly within the party and union, serving on both the city council and district council. Opposing Nazism before the 1935 Saar referendum, he lost all positions after the annexation and was dismissed from his job in 1937 for political reasons. Arrested by the Gestapo, he was forced into labor from 1938 to 1944 and later interned in KZ Ebensee, where he was liberated by U.S. forces on May 7, 1945.
