Josef Schwarz, born in Nieder-Saulheim on 1 November 1888, lived with his wife Adele, née Bronne, and their daughter Margot at today’s Ostergasse 28. The family ran a shop selling colonial goods, tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, haberdashery and methylated spirits. Margot, born in 1921, was sent to her aunt Elsa Bronne in Glens Falls, New York, in 1936 as anti-Jewish persecution increased. Josef and Adele were forced to leave Saulheim in November 1938; new identity cards were issued for them in Mainz in 1939. On 20 July 1939 they escaped to the United States aboard the S.S. New York, together with Adele’s father Abraham Bronne. In America the family lived in Massachusetts, later opened a small restaurant in Hudson Falls, and eventually settled in Rutland, Vermont. Adele died in 1977, Josef in 1978 and Margot in 1998.
