Nathan Bär, born in Nieder-Saulheim on 5 June 1873, lived with his wife Appolonia, née Nachmann, and their son Markus in a small house near today’s Ostergasse 46. Nathan was a trader and merchant dealing in small animals; Markus worked as a labourer. The family was among the poorest Jewish families in the village. Between 1938 and 1942 Nathan and Appolonia were dispossessed and forced to move to Mainz, Löwenhofstraße 4. They were deported from Darmstadt to Theresienstadt on 27 September 1942. Appolonia was murdered there in December 1942, Nathan on 21 June 1943. Markus had also moved to Mainz; he was deported from Löwenhofstraße 4 to the Piaski ghetto on 25 March 1942 and murdered in Majdanek on 3 September 1942.
