Roeterstraat 2

Levie Beugeltas (1870) married Margaretha Rine (1875) in 1896. They have four daughters, six sons and 18 grandchildren. Two children die young: Arnold Beugeltas (1904 – 1908) and Judith Beugeltas (1911-1913).
As an unskilled laborer, Levie earns a living alternately as a porter, diamond cutter and cigar roller, but it is never easy to support the family. Due to the irregular income, they are dependent on the rent of poor housing in the old Jewish neighborhood and they move regularly when the rent arrears have become too great or the houses are so dilapidated that they have to be demolished. The living conditions are so unhealthy that in 1909 the whole family was struck by tuberculosis. There must be a cure for a year in the Jewish sanatorium Beth Refouah (house of healing) on the Mauritslaan in Hilversum.
From 1910 the family settled in the Rapenburgerstraat and continued to live there in varying composition until 1935. When Margaretha died in 1916 at the age of forty, it was a heavy blow to the family. The eldest daughter Schoontje takes over her mother's duties, but in the end two children have to be removed from home.
In 1935 Levie moves with Schoontje and her husband Philip to Waterlooplein. In January 1938 he was given a place in the Municipal Nursing Home for the Elderly of Days, the former poorhouse on Roetersstraat (now: Dr. Sarphatihuis). Due to the anti-Jewish measures during the occupation, all Jewish residents had to find a place in Jewish institutions and on December 31, 1941, Levie, together with 18 other Jewish seniors, moved into Hijman Kool's pension at Rapenburg 98.
On September 5, 1942, Levie is taken from here to Westerbork and two days later deported to Auschwitz. There he is murdered upon arrival on September 10. Levie turned 71 years old.
