Fré Cohen was born in 1903 in a simple working-class family in Amsterdam. Her father is a diamond worker. Fré attends the Graphic School and is the only female student there. She becomes a successful graphic artist and a convinced member of the SDAP (Social Democratic Workers' Party). She works for the AJC (Workers Youth Central) and later also for the municipality of Amsterdam. For example, she designs the Giro Book, postcards from the City Cleaning Service, and printed materials for municipal services such as the Trade Institutions, the Energy Company and the City Theater. In addition to her work for the municipality of Amsterdam, she takes care of the graphic design of organizations such as the SDAP and the Socialist Union. From 1933, Fré Cohen made illustrations for articles by Joseph Gompers in Jewish magazines such as De Vrijdagnacht and Het Nieuw Israelietisch Weekblad. She also makes book covers for publishers such as the Arbeiderspers, Querido and the Wereldbibliotheek. She also produces printed matter such as ex-libris, admission tickets, bookmarks, birth and wedding cards, certificates, calendars, landscapes and headlines for magazines and magazines, including the Jewish women's magazine Ha-ischa. Fré was extremely creative and accepted everything that was offered to her. She was very active and energetic and worked at a fast pace, which earned her the nickname Saartje Wip at the city printing house. She has had a major influence on the design of the 1930s.
During the war she had several places to go into hiding, most recently with the Zomer family on the current Leemweg in Borne. This hiding place was betrayed and Fré was arrested. As agreed before, she went to the toilet where she took a pill: she was unwell and transported to the hospital in Hengelo. She died there three days later with two guards at her bedside. She was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Hengelo and is still commemorated there on May 1 - Labor Day.
