Abraham Barendse was born on December 16, 1905 as the son of Hartog Barendse and Adriana Spiero. His father, born in 1884 in Rotterdam, was a rope merchant, his mother, born in 1882 in The Hague, was a housewife. Hartog and Adriana were married on April 5, 1904 in The Hague. Adriana was then expecting their first child, Rosetta, who was due to be born 3 months later. Abraham was born when father, mother and his one and a half year older sister Rosetta had just moved from The Hague to Zandstraat in Rotterdam. Midwife Jansje van Dam has registered the birth with the municipality.
In the next twenty years more brothers and sisters were added: Jacob Izaac, Catharina, Betsy, Hendrika, Theresia, the twins Henrica and Anna (Anna died shortly after birth), Eduard, Isidor (died immediately after birth), Dina, and the last being Jansje in 1925. In the meantime, the family has moved thirteen times within Rotterdam.
