Blekerssingel 28
Gouda
Otto Teitler (42) and Hildegard Teitler-Cohn (34) lived at this address for over a year and a half.
Otto was born on December 28, 1900 in Cernauti. He was a grocer and merchant. In 1933 he came to Rotterdam as a Romanian from Nazi Germany. Hildegard was born on December 6, 1907 in Buer, Germany. She came to Rotterdam from Winterswijk in 1934. After their wedding on April 22, 1936, the couple lived at various addresses in the city, but as foreign refugees they had to leave the coastal region from September 1940.
On January 17, 1941 they therefore moved to Blekerssingel in Gouda. A month later, Hildegard's parents Gustav and Erna Cohn-Joseph also moved into this house. During the time that both couples lived here, the Jewish fellow citizens were increasingly isolated and disenfranchised. Parks and other public spaces became off limits, they had to wear the Jewish star. In mid-July 1942, the deportations of the Jews and then police raids began.
Otto and Hildegard were already imprisoned in Westerbork on 17 September 1942. Their deportation to Auschwitz followed after a week. Hildegard was murdered immediately upon arrival on September 28. Otto must have worked as a labor slave and was murdered four months later on January 31, 1943.
When Otto and Hildegard were arrested, Hildegard's parents Gustav and Erna had to exchange the house on Blekerssingel for a transit house on Hoge Gouwe 123. Here they lived together with other Jewish fellow citizens. They were given a further six months, until the big April rave on April 9 from the Central Tehuis on the Oosthaven. Then they too had to go to Westerbork. On April 23, 1943, they were killed immediately upon arrival in Sobibor. Two of the twelve Stolpersteine in the sidewalk in front of the Hoge Gouwe 123 are reminders of Gustav and Erna.
For Hildegard and Otto, there are now two Stolpersteine in front of the house on Blekerssingel 28.
