Badhuisstraat 43
Haarlem
Moses Pezon, born in 1883 in Linden, Germany, was a respected perspective and religious teacher in Haarlem. He moved to Haarlem in 1907, where he lived in the Spaarnwouderstraat for almost 30 years before moving to Badhuisstraat in 1938. Moses and his wife Helena Cohen had three children: Louis, Rebecca and Izak. Moses was known for his sonorous singing voice and was active in the Jewish community as a Sjouchet and teacher. Despite a Sperre, which initially protected him against deportation, Moses and his family were brought to Westerbork in July 1943 and deported to Auschwitz on 31 August, where they were murdered on arrival.
Louis Pezon, their eldest son, was an accountant and conductor of a choir. He married Julie Gobes in 1942 and lived with his parents. They were taken to Camp Vught in February 1943 and then to Sobibor, where they were murdered on July 9, 1943.
Saartje Wijtvliet, the resident help of the Pezons, married Jacob de Jong in 1942. Both were deported shortly after their marriage; Saartje was murdered in Sobibor on 28 May 1943. Jacob was used as a forced laborer and died on March 31, 1944 in Central Europe.
Only a niece of Moses survived the Holocaust.
