Korte Begijnestraat 29
Haarlem
Manuel van Gelderen, born in 1882 in Nijehaske, was one of the twelve children of Benjamin Salomon van Gelderen and Reintje Slager. He married twice: first with Duifje Polak, with whom he had two children, and later with Ester Hilversum, with whom he had thirteen children. Manuel and his family lived at various addresses in Haarlem, including the Korte Begijnestraat 29rd.
In 1942 the family received the call to report for transport to Westerbork and then to Auschwitz. Manuel, Ester, and eight of their children were murdered in Auschwitz on 31 August 1942. Only their sons Benjamin and Jacob were selected as forced laborers. Jacob died six months later, but Benjamin survived the war.
Of the children who were all out of the house, Annie and Salomon survived the war. Manuel was 60 years old, and Ester was 47 years old. Their children Clara, Marie, Rachel, Lena, Sophia, and Sonja were 18, 17, 14, 11, 8, and 6 years old respectively when they died in Auschwitz.
This tragedy became part of the Baruch collection, an initiative that stumbling stone places in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
