Walther Behrendt, a successful Jewish clothing businessman from Berlin, fled to the Netherlands in 1936 with his wife Gertrud and their children Heinrich, Peter Adolf and Johanna Eleonora. They lived at Graaf Janlaan 27 in Naarden, but after the German occupation they were forced to Amsterdam and then deported via Westerbork. Walther and Gertrud were murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. Heinrich died in Dachau in 1945. Twins Peter and Johanna survived, but Peter died soon after liberation from illness and exhaustion. Johanna later emigrated to the United States. Otto and Hanna Kahn, relatives who had stayed at the same address, disappeared after deportation to Zamosc.
