Abel Sanders, a Catholic draftsman by profession, is active in the National Organization for Aid to the People in Hiding (LO). He is known illegally as "Koos Sanders". On May 29, 1942, Abel moves to the city of Groningen, where he starts working as a general employee of the National Support Fund (NSF), an organization that takes care of the financing of the resistance. In addition, he would be a member of the fighting team Diephorst.
All these underground activities will cost Abel dearly. On his 25th birthday, on March 15, 1945, he is arrested and taken to the Detention House in Groningen. Less than a month later, on April 10, 1945, he was executed in Bakkeveen, along with nine other prisoners, including De Ploeg artist Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman. Only a few days after their death, the city of Groningen is liberated by Canadian troops.
