Bernard Salomon Themans was married to Judik Simons. They married on 1 May 1935 and lived in the Central Israelite Orphanage in Utrecht, where they were "father and mother" of the orphans and of course their own children. The Central Israelite Orphanage on the Nieuwegracht was a national orphanage for Jewish children from the age of six. In October 1942 the Germans deported all the children and the entire orphanage staff.
