The Swaalep family lived at Reitzstraat 21-II, the house that now has number 105. Jacob Swaalep, 'Jaak', was a diamond worker and an amateur racing cyclist. Being unemployed, he was put to forced work in a labour camp in the summer of 1941. He fell ill there. He cycled back to Amsterdam and died in hospital of meningitis on 16 July 1941, thirty years old. He is buried at the Jewish cemetery in Diemen. His wife Clara Swaalep-de Jong was left with three young children: Albertus, Rebecca Celina and Selma Anna. She did voluntary work at an office of the Jewish Council on the Afrikanerplein. At the end of June 1943 she and her children were taken from their home. They were deported through the Hollandsche Schouwburg and Westerbork to Sobibor, where they were murdered on 9 July 1943.
