Benjamin van Gelder was a son of Israël van Gelder and Anna Stofkooper. He married on 21 June 1895 in Borne to Antje de Leeuw from Almelo-Stad, a daughter of Abraham Marcus de Leeuw and Betje Fuldauer. The couple had seven children, viz. on December 3, 1895 Agatha Betsij; on May 7, 1897 Betje; on September 6, 1898 Israel; on May 11, 1900 Roosje; on October 27, 1901 Anna; on August 9, 1903 Abraham and on March 3, 1905 Izak Philip. All children now had their own family and no longer lived at home. Agatha Betsij was married in Hengelo on 4 August 1927 to Wilhelmus Jacobus Maria Moers; Betje van Gelder married Wouterus Gijsbertus Cousijnsen on 8 August 1929 in Enschede; Israël van Gelder married Sara Mooij on February 4, 1926 in Hengelo; Roosje married Theodorus Lünding from Epe in Germany on February 9, 1926 in Losser; Anna married Benjamin van Gelder on April 19, 1928 in Hengelo; Abraham van Gelder married Bela van Spier in Maastricht on August 29, 1928 and Izak Philip van Gelder married on March 1, 1929 in Zutphen, just like Carolina Polak. Of the seven children, only Israel and his sister Anna were murdered during the Holocaust. Izak Philip van Gelderen, his wife Carolina Polak and their son Benjamin survived the war; they were registered again in Hengel after the war in 1948. The four other children also most likely survived the war with their families. However, the parents Benjamin van Gelder and his wife Antje de Leeuw were murdered in the Shoah. They were first sent to concentration camp Vught on April 9, 1943 and registered in Westerbork after a month on May 9, 1943, and subsequently deported to Sobibor on May 11. Both were immediately murdered there on arrival on May 14, 1943.
