Caroline Benima was born on August 15, 1885 in Bunde (Germany). She was the daughter of Mozes Levie Benima and Frederika Levij. Carolina was the widow of Jozef van Dam who died on February 5, 1942 in Leek. His funeral was the last in the Jewish cemetery of Leek. Caroline, together with her sister Jeanette, who was living with her, was arrested on November 27, 1942 and taken to Westerbork. She was deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz on December 12, 1942, where she was murdered on December 15, 1942. Caroline lived to be 57 years old. Caroline and Jozef's three children survived the war. In memory of their mother and brother, Caroline and Leo, the family placed a memorial stone in the Jewish cemetery of Leek. Leo van Dam was born on December 3, 1917 in Leek. He was the youngest son of Jozef van Dam and Caroline Benima. He was a business manager by trade. Leo was arrested in Leek on 7 July 1942 and transported to Westerbork. He was deported to Auschwitz on the first transport from Westerbork on 15 July 1942 and murdered in Auschwitz on 30 September 1942. Leo turned 24 years old. Jeanette Benima was born on March 27, 1891 in Bunde (Germany). She was the daughter of Mozes Levie Benima and Frederika Levij. Jeanette was unmarried and lived with her sister Caroline and her family. On November 27, 1942 she was arrested together with her sister and taken to Westerbork. On December 12, 1942, both sisters were deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz, where they were murdered on December 15. Jeanette was 51 years old.
