Benjamin Colthof, born on February 8, 1927 in Opsterland, his sister Jetta Colthof, born on June 20, 1937 in the same place, and their mother Grietje Colthof-Kropveld, born on June 13, 1898 in Onstwedde, were confronted with the horrors of the Holocaust. Their father, Jozua Colthof, had died in 1937. The family was registered in Westerbork on November 12, 1942 and deported to Auschwitz on November 20, 1942. Upon arrival at Auschwitz, Grietje and Jetta were immediately gassed, and Benjamin died a few months later, also in Auschwitz. This story highlights the heartbreaking reality of many Jewish families during World War II.
