Rielerweg 86 Deventer
Jacques' father, Benjamin Hartog, had a gold and silver trade in Deventer in de Graven and organized purchasing and sales. His brothers and sisters also all stayed in Deventer. Jacques was an appraiser and arranged public auctions. Jacques was born in Deventer in 1872. He married Clara Mayer from Cologne in 1904. Together they had two children: Ernest, born in 1905 in Deventer, and Cäthe, born in 1909 in Deventer. Jacques was a member of the Jewish community of Deventer. Ernest probably worked in his father's case, also as an appraiser. Daughter Cäthe married in 1937 to Jacob Peper from Amsterdam, a traveling salesman, and had a son with him, Jacques Ernest, born in 1938 in Deventer. Ernest had to go to the Jewish labor camp Hummelo in August 1942. From there he went to Westerbork in early October 1942 and continued two weeks later to Auschwitz, where he succumbed a few months later, on 28 February 1943. Jacques went into hiding in Groenlo. It is not known whether his wife was there. He was operated there in the hospital, but died shortly afterwards on April 20, 1944. He was buried without a coffin and even in the clothes he wore in the garden of the Hilferdink brothers. This of course happened in silence and not according to the rite. In 1946 his wife and daughter wanted to bury him in a Jewish way in Deventer. The reburial took place on June 11, 1946, with permission from the Church Board. Clara, Jacques' wife, their daughter Cäthe and her son Ernest survived the war in hiding. Cäthe's husband was murdered in Auschwitz in September 1942. Clara died in Deventer in 1957 and is buried next to her husband.
