Mrs. Johanne Hedwig van Straaten was born in The Hague on February 17, 1891, the daughter of Isaac van Straaten and Caroline van Straaten. She married Philippe Céleste la Chapelle on July 9, 1912 at The Hague, which marriage was dissolved in 1924. The couple had 3 daughters.

Despite a divorce, she kept the name La Chapelle. In Heemstede she initially lived from 31 March 1937 at 128 Antonis Duycklaan and moved to 25 Maarten Hobbemastraat in 1939. In 1937 she had taken over the shop from Mr. Pistorius and became the owner of the Binnenweg 91 building. name of the bookshop changed to 'Kennemerland', but sometimes the name 'Hedwig' appears in the archives, the first name of the new bookseller.

Mrs. la Chapelle-van Straaten arrived in Westerborg on November 26, 1942. and transferred to Theresienstadt on September 4, 1944. Although Jewish, she professed the Remonstrant faith. It can only be found in public sources that she was deregistered from the population register on October 17, 1941 and was registered as of November 25 of that year in The Hague, where she grew up, with Frederikstraat 157 as her home address. September 1944 she was deported from Westerbork to Nazi Germany and, as appears from a note on the population map: “died May 12, 1945 Theresienstadt”. That means four days after the liberation of the concentration camp in Czechoslovakia by the Russian Red Army, believed to be the result of hardship and exhaustion. Her younger sister Marie Mathilde van Straaten, born August 27, 1897 in The Hague and from June 1940 to the end of November 1941, living on the top floor of Binnenweg 91, was also killed, namely in Auschwitz extermination camp on January 21, 1943. Their names were recorded in 1995 on an 'In Memoriam' list of 140 'Killed or missing Jewish civilians from Heemstede' compiled by Marcel Bulte and Hans Krol with the cooperation of Dolf Böing under the name Johanna (Hedwig) van Straaten.

On the initiative of Mrs. Nel Kars (* 1938) from Bilthoven, well-known actress, and granddaughter of the actor Philippe la Chapelle who was married to Johanne Hedwig van Straaten from 1912 to 1924, two so-called 'stolpersteine' were placed in front of the Binnenweg 91 Heemstede building. .
