Dahliastraat 23
Assen
Diele Jacobus Weidgraaf lived here at 23 Dahliastraat with his wife Jantje Popken. Together they had 12 children, 8 sons and 4 daughters.
At the time when Diele was taken from home, 9 children were still living at home. Boele was the oldest.
Diele Jacobus was a caring husband and father. He was a real family man.
In addition, he was also a social man, he cared deeply about the fate of the weak in society, and wanted to do something for them.
He had a great sense of justice. From that involvement he became a member of the SDAP and later of the CPN.
Diele was co-founder of the still existing funeral association “De Laatse Eer” in Assen. He and the association's co-founders believed that the working class was also entitled to a fair and dignified manner of burial. Diele Jacobus was secretary of the association.
He was also active in the cultural field. For example, he was involved in activities of Opbouw Drenthe and gave lectures. In addition, he was chairman of the playground association E.A.S. Right around the corner.
But above all, he was a nature person. He was often found in the field. Especially in the area of Loon, where his parents lived. Albert, his 2nd son, has written another beautiful poem about him, entitled “De Olde Streuper”.
Diele was a groundworker by profession. As a self-employed person he did a lot of work for, among others, Heidemij and Staatsbosbeheer.
On April 16, 1941, he was asked by two Asser police officers to come to the police station under false pretenses. He never came home. He was transferred to the Detention House on the Brink in Assen, where he stayed for 6 months until October 24, 1941 ..
On the birthday of their youngest child Hennie, Jantje's wife let the youngest children play at the Brink in front of the House of Detention. This with the aim and the hope that her husband would hear them.
On October 24, 1941 he was deported to Amersfoort. His wife, who was informed about this transport, had a photo taken of the children who still live in the house. He has received this photo and can take it with him.
Jantje was present at the station with her children, where she was still quite agitated against the transport of her husband. With the result that a German soldier threatened to take her.
Six months later, on March 28, 1942, Diele Jacobus was taken with 90 political prisoners from Amersfoort to the Buchenwald concentration camp. The camp journal stated that 90 Schützhäftlinge were eingeliefert.
Diele became, as the Germans called it, "Suspected of more illegal communist Tätigkeit". He did illegal work for the party, was involved in the Noorderlicht group Groningen and he distributed the illegal magazines Het Noorderlicht and De Waarheid.
In Buchenwald camp his health was not improving. Despite being a groundworker, the inhuman conditions must have been too much for him.
On July 6, 1942 he was transported from Buchenwald to Dachau with 300 sick prisoners. After all, they were no longer of use in the quarry.
He ends up in the infirmary in Barak 7. He only stayed there for 20 days.
Diele dies in the early morning of July 26, 1942, at 3:00 am as a result of severe weakening during medical experiments.
8 Days later, on August 3, 1942, Jantje was notified of the death of her husband. She was informed that she could request the death certificate from Dachau Camp for a fee of 85 pence or 75 cents. "How Gründlich can it be".
On August 28, 1942, Jantje was informed that she had to report to the Scholtenhuis in Groningen the following Monday at 9:00 am where she could receive her husband's clothes. She had to bring a suitcase for that.
His black duffle coat was attached to his returned clothes. This was later entertained by his son Harm, who was a tailor at Frans van Buuren on the Nieuwe Huizen.
The jacket has been worn by the Diele boys for several years.
Diele Jacobus Weidgraaf, a unique person, was 54 years old.
We will always remember him.
Never forget, as his son Albert says in the last verse in the poem “De olde Streuper”.
“Fill jaoren bint now already for gaon.
You have not been there for a long time ......
But if I just walk through the door,
Then I will see you in my mind again.
If yes then leop'n on the heath,
Even if it was sometimes quite hot,
I'll never forget your life,
Even if I'm getting a hundred years old. ”
