Markt 12
Steenwijk
In the 1930s, Clara and Simon van der Horst had a shop in haberdashery and manufactures on the Markt, which now houses the Vogelina store and the adjacent building. You could get all sorts of things: children's, women's and men's clothing, mattresses, blankets, sheets, etc. Clara and Simon had three children: Betty, Joseph and Margreet.
In 1935 Simon died of a heart attack in the pool. As a widow, Clara had a hard time. She decided to sell the two properties next to her store and to continue with a smaller range. "Until 1941 they were still quite happy," wrote Bep van Dam-Gokkes, a friend of the family who survived the war.
On April 9, 1943, Clara and her children were picked up from their home on the Markt. They were transported to Westerbork and from there to extermination camp Sobibor. Margreet turned 8, Joseph 13, Betty 14 and mother Clara 47.
