Tukseweg 108 Steenwijk
Marianne, Mozes and Margarite were the children of Mannes de Groot, who came from a family that had lived in and around Steenwijk for several generations, and of Cato de Leeuw from Zutphen. Mannes and Cato had nine children. Two children died quite young. Marianne was the oldest and probably never worked outside the home. She helped her mother in the household. When her parents died, she was the one to continue the household. She had a round back and that must have played a part in that she did not work outside the home. Like her brother Moses and sister Margarita, Marianne remained unmarried. They lived together on the Markt and then on the Onnastraat. In 1940 she moved into the house on Tukseweg. Mozes became a teacher and attended school C in Onnastraat and school B at the Paardenmarkt. He was also active as a union man of the Federation of Teachers in Steenwijk. At the beginning of the war, he destroyed the administrative records. According to a witness, he had thrown them into the Channel as a precaution. Because Moses was unable to sign the Arian Declaration, he, like all other Jewish teachers, was denied access to the school. The Jewish children, who were removed from various schools in Steenwijk, were taught by master Moos at his home on the Tukseweg. He was able to continue with this until the end of July 1942. Then he was called up to report to camp Conrad, a labor camp west of Rouveen on Conradsweg. The employees were employed in paving dirt roads and dredging ditches. There is still a Jewish road and a Jewish ditch. On 3 October 1942, the men present were taken to Westerbork transit camp. Moses had a heart attack there. After recovering sufficiently, he was transported to Auschwitz on October 23, where he was murdered three days later. He was 54 years old. Both sisters, Marianne and Margarita, were left in fear when Moses had to go to the labor camp. On Tuesday October 6, 1942, the two sisters left their home and walked across the Dolder Bridge past the milk factory and the Town Hall in Tuk. Near the butcher Lambertus Hof's shop diagonally opposite the Bergweg they collapsed on the street. Both had taken poison. Marianne died at Hof's house and Margarita was taken to the hospital in Meppel and survived. Marianna was buried a few days later at the Jewish cemetery on the Eesveenseweg. Margarita was sent to Deventer for recovery, from where she will be sent to Westerbork on April 13. A week later, she is deported to Sobibor, where she was murdered the day before her 47th birthday. Mannes and Isidoor, two brothers of Marianne, Margarita and Mozes, also die in a concentration camp. Their brother Hein is the only one of the family to survive the war.
