Choorstraat 46 Delft
Daniel van IJssel is the son of Isaac van IJssel and Anna Frank. Isaac van IJssel was born on February 10, 1881 in Noordwijk. Isaac met Anna Frank in The Hague, where he later lived. She was born on September 12, 1886 in Wouw near Bergen op Zoom. In 1913 they married and on December 8, 1913 the couple moved to Delft. Isaac van IJssel was a merchant and had his own clothing store in Delft called 'De Adelaar' at 46 Choorstraat. The van IJssel family lived in the house above the store. On December 17, 1914, Daniel van IJssel, Daan, was born in Delft. He later became manager of his father's business. His hobby was playing football, which he did at DVC. Daan had a sister, Selma. She was born on September 29, 1919. Isaac van IJssel was a representative of the Jewish Council in Delft. Daan van IJssel was contact person for the JCC, the Jewish Coordination Committee, in Delft. Daniel married Serlina "Lien" Vedder on December 15, 1936. She was born on February 8, 1915 in Zandvoort. They continued to live together in the house on Choorstraat. Daniel's parents moved to 262 Insulindeweg together with their daughter Selma. On July 22, 1938, Daniel and Lien's son was born. His name is Isaac Bernard, but he was also called Pum. The war broke out and gradually Jews were given fewer and fewer rights, also in Delft. They had to wear Stars of David, which had to be obtained from Isaac van IJssel. Signs were placed in Delft with 'Forbidden for Jews'. In 1943 a large number of Jews were deported and the protection of the people on the Jewish Council was lifted. Like many others, the van IJssel family also went into hiding. Because it was difficult to go into hiding with a child, Pum was placed in another hiding place. He eventually ended up in South Limburg. When Daniel and Lien went into hiding, they fled to Friesland. They were brought there by a gentleman from Zwieten. Van Zwieten was an NSB member and betrayed Daniel and his wife. They were arrested and taken to camp Westerbork. On October 29, 1943 Daniel arrived in camp Westerbork and was housed in barrack 67. On November 16, 1943 he was deported to Auschwitz and there he was murdered on January 31, 1944. Serlina van IJssel was deported on October 19, 1943 to Auschwitz. There she was murdered on October 22, 1943. In the summer of 1945 Isaac van IJssel found his grandson Pum, who was hiding in South Limburg, in Stein. He took it back to Delft. The transition from South Limburg to Delft was difficult for Pum. He went to live with Daniel's sister, Selma. Selma was married to Max van Esso. Max got the clothing company from Isaac that he had got back after the war. After Max died on May 27, 1954, Selma became the new owner of the business. Pum had a hard time getting used to his aunt. He soon ended up in several Jewish children's homes. He had a good relationship with his grandparents. Isaac van IJssel passed away in 1958. Pum was now twenty years old and it was intended that he would work in the business. This did not happen, because at that time Selma remarried. On May 20, 1959 Selma married Meijer Sluyser, he was a journalist. Meijer thought that Pum should work elsewhere. Anna Frank, widow of Isaac van IJssel, also died on 2 January 1966.
