Ennekerdijk 23 Borne
Nathan Zilversmit, eldest son of Izak Zilversmit, marries Sofie Strauss from Millingen in Germany. They have their son Iwan in 1924 and live on the Ennekerdijk (now number 23). Nathan was a dance teacher by profession, but he and his wife also traded in fabrics. When he died of pneumonia in 1930, his wife tried to provide for her subsistence with a trade in fabrics and groceries. In 1938, Sofie applies for a residence permit for her 81-year-old German mother, because 'her Mother is of a very old age, so that nursing is necessary with her daughter in Borne'. Her brother Siegfried or Frits, who lives in Amsterdam and is not inexpert, declares that he will contribute NLG 10 per week to the cost of living for his mother. Moreover, it is stated that the mother can also dispose of an amount of NLG 6,000. Sofie also tries to get her sister to Borne, because she can no longer survive in Germany: "Her property, being a house with a meadow, she had to sell and pay the proceeds of it as a fine to the German government." Sofie says that she earns NLG 20 to NLG 23 a week with her business, that her broker also wants to help again, and that she has NLG 1000 from her sister on a savings book. All the records had to be pulled out to make it credible that the refugees would not be burdened by the Born community. The municipal warden has no objection and notes: "The whole of the family makes a neat impression, from which I concluded that she has a good life." During the war, Ms Zilversmit was transported to Camp Vught in April 1943 and via Westerbork to Sobibor where she was killed on arrival. Her mother is then probably already deceased. As far as is known, the sister did not come to Borne. Sofie's son Iwan passed his MULO exam in 1940 and started working as a weaver at Spanjaard in 1941. Ivan is one of the first to be picked up by the police in Borne, a young boy. He was posted to camp Overbroek in Kesteren in August 1942 and was taken from Westerbork to Sobibor in March 1943. He is the only one from Borne on this train transport and is gassed immediately upon arrival, aged 18.
