Molenweg 247 Zwolle
With these stumbling blocks we commemorate Levie Khan, his wife Reina Khan-van Holland and her father Jakob van Holland. Reina and Jakob die on October 19, 1942 in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Reina is then 29 years old, Jacob 76. Levie dies no later than March 31, 1944 somewhere in Central Europe, aged 33 years. ** We know little about their lives. Like so many other Jewish people from Zwolle, they have been wiped off the face of the earth without leaving many traces of them. Surviving relatives are unknown. In the archives we only find the usual data on births, marriages, deaths and addresses. On the other hand, the route to their demise can be easily followed on paper. Jakob van Holland was born in Ruinen in 1866. On April 30, 1902 he married in Hoogeveen to Mietje Cohen, born in 1869 in Gieten. The spouses are traders and servants by profession. Jakob and Mietje have 4 children; two sons and two daughters. The sons, both called Abraham, die young. The daughters are Anna and Reina, born in Ruinen in 1904 and 1912. Reina married on April 6, 1938 in Hoogeveen to Levie Khan, an office clerk. He was born in Hoogeveen in 1910, the son of Mina Khan and an unknown father. The young couple will live at Molenweg 247 in Zwolle. They take in the elderly Jacob. He was a widower after the death of his wife Mietje in 1934. The following tracks lead to the Westerbork transit camp where Jakob, Levie and Reina are registered between 3 and 5 October 1942. Levie then comes from a Dutch labor camp for Jewish men. It is unknown which camp. In the summer of '42, dozens of Jewish men from Zwolle were forced to work in camps in Overijssel and Friesland. On October 2, 1942, all men from the labor camps were transferred to Westerbork. Their partners and children were brought together under the pretext of family reunification on 2 October in the gymnasium of the Celeanum gymnasium at Veerallee and deported to Westerbork via the Zwolle livestock station the following day, Shabbat 3 October. Reina went to Celeanum with her husband in hopes of reunification with her husband. Levie Khan made another ultimate attempt in Westerbork to escape deportation by claiming that his unknown father was of non-Jewish origin. In German eyes, that would have given him semi-Jewish status with exemption from deportation. In vain because on October 16, Jacob, Reina and Levie with 1710 deportees set out for hell on earth, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Reina and her elderly father were killed on October 19 immediately upon arrival.
