Previously Daniel Willinkplein 9. Sophia Ernst Levij, born July 8, 1852 in Goersdorf, near Woerth, Bas-Rhin Alsace ten N. van Strasbourg. Married Sept. 21. 1875 with Frederic Joseph Ernst, in Paris; Then she was, according to the wedding act, "Sans Profession". How and when they came to the Netherlands is unknown. Her husband, who worked in an office, died in 1929. They had two daughters: Rebecca, who probably already died in 1939 and Irma, the wife of the non-Jewish doctor Jan van Konijnenburg and mother of Martha and her brother Cornelis Jan Ernst . Her last home address was the Jewish Pension Cohen, at Daniel Willinkplein 9/i. We do not know whether the Van Konijnenburg family, who lived in Haarlem for a long time but returned to Amsterdam in 1936 (first in Tesselschadestraat, later in Euterpestraat [now Gerrit van der Veewnstraat 76/I] suggested her to live here. She lived with four other Jewish residents; Already two weeks later in Auschwitz. Steps have no goal, "says Westerbork's registration card Two days later, her death was officially confirmed in the population register in July 1951. We think with respect of this Jewish life. We know very little about her existence, but it can't be otherwise, or her daughter, son -in -law and grandchildren, who did not live far from her in the Euterpestraat, had an intimate contact with her. That may have been a comfort despite all the horrors of her last years of life. A short poem, writ by Inez Meter (1925-2022), first city poet of Gouda and honorary citizen of that city: Godlof Their names are saved turn back in town where they lived the removed In the street where their house is standing In the sidewalk where their footstep lies will their lives and After the road too their-not-lake life be readable Readable for everyone who will stand still there will be silent In their names they return.
