Otto Gutekunst was born in Mutterstadt on 9 September 1897. He ran a farm at Schulstraße 25, where he lived with his wife Anna Mazömeit and their three children. Under the Nazi regime he was labelled “asocial”; he was accused of neglecting his family and farm, drinking, leaving bills unpaid and assault. On 29 September 1937 the mayor requested that Gutekunst be sent to Dachau concentration camp for one year, supposedly to be “educated” into a “useful person.” Just ten days later he arrived in Dachau as a forced labour prisoner, registered under number 12837. He died there on 19 December 1937, aged 40. His mother arranged for his urn to be sent from Munich back to Mutterstadt, where he was given a grave.
