The Jewish sisters Melanie Klein and Emma Klein were born in Nieder-Saulheim in 1877 and 1882. They lived and worked at Römer 213, now Neupforte 3. Their parents were Salomon Klein and Philippina, née Heidingsfelder; a brother, Siegmund, died as an infant. Emma ran a small shop selling haberdashery, textiles, cigars and cigarettes together with Maria Kröhle, who was not Jewish, and Melanie also worked in the business. After the November pogroms, both sisters were forced on 2 January 1939 to move to a so-called “Judenhaus” in Mainz. Melanie died in Mainz on 14 June 1939 from cervical cancer and was buried in the New Jewish Cemetery there. Emma was deported from Rheinhessen to Theresienstadt on 27 September 1942 and was murdered there on 15 March 1943.
