Louis Groen and Elisabeth Groen-Levij lived at Frederikspark 10 in Haarlem from May 1940, staying in the house owned by their daughter Kitty. Louis, born in Amsterdam in 1881, worked as a travelling salesman and later as a merchant. Elisabeth, born in Amsterdam in 1877, was a handicrafts teacher. They had two daughters, Kitty Jeanne and Jeanette Betsy. Kitty survived the war in hiding; Jeanette and her young son Hans were murdered in Auschwitz in October 1944.
As deportation threatened, Louis and Elisabeth went into hiding separately: Louis in Heemstede and Elisabeth with their housekeeper in Haarlem. Both were arrested on 27 May 1944, taken to Westerbork, deported to Theresienstadt on 4 September 1944 and then to Auschwitz on 28 October. They were murdered there on 31 October 1944. Louis was 63 and Elisabeth 67.
