Rapenburgerstraat 46-II Amsterdam
Meijer Beugeltas (1902) and Anna Mercy (1908) married in 1929 and moved to Rapenburgerstraat. First at no. 56 and from 1938 at no. 46, in the same house where Anna's mother, widow Vogeltje van Loggem, also lives on a floor. They had three sons: Abraham Beugeltas (1930), Levie Beugeltas (1932) and Isaac Beugeltas (1937). Meijer has been a market vendor in fruit on the Waterlooplein for many years. Until her marriage, Anna worked in a laundry and in the household, but in addition to taking care of their three sons, Anna also regularly had to help to supplement the income. Especially during the economic crisis of the 1930s, it became more difficult to make ends meet on Meijer's earnings. Competition is increasing in the market and customers have less to spend. At certain times the family has to turn to the municipality for financial support. During the occupation, Meijer received a permit to participate in the market combination on Minervaplein, one of the markets designated by the occupying forces where only Jews are allowed to do their shopping. However, in the summer of 1942 the family received the call for the so-called work expansion. They are registered in Westerbork on September 3, 1942, and the next day they are transported to Auschwitz. Cosel It is one of the so-called Cosel transports, named after the station of the town of Cosel (now: Koźle, Poland) which is located 80 km west of Auschwitz. There, in the period from August 28 to December 12, 1942, men in the age of 15 to 55 years old were brutally removed from French, Belgian and Dutch transports and separated from their families. They will come under the Kommando Schmelt, which organizes forced labor in the regions of Upper Silesia and Sudetenland. Women and children have to watch helplessly as their husbands, sons and fathers are held at gunpoint as the train starts moving again. It makes for heartbreaking scenes. Anna, Abraham, Levie and Isaac have to continue on their way without Meijer and are murdered on 7 September on arrival in Auschwitz. The date 10 September is officially registered for Anna, but it is likely that she too was murdered at the same time as her children. Meijer has to do heavy work under difficult circumstances and eventually ends up in Extern Kommando Gräditz (now: Grodziszcze, Poland), a camp where typhus is prevalent and where there is already fighting over a piece of bread, in January 1944 from exhaustion. His body is buried in a mass grave just outside the perimeter of the local cemetery. (Source: Achterdesteen.nl)
