Verspronckweg 195 Haarlem
Etty was born in Amsterdam as Etty Noah, daughter of Theodora Noah (1904-1943) who was a nurse in the Israelite hospital on the Nieuwe Kerkstraat. Etty's father has remained unknown. In February 1932, Theodora gave the custody of her baby out of the hands of her baby and in 1933 he came to the then childless Irmi Stein and her husband Cas Heerma van Voss, recipient of domains in Assen. In 1935 this family settled in Haarlem, on Brederodestraat 26 as this address was known at the time. In the meantime, his own daughter was born, Inge, who is shown in the photo together with Etty. Through the German parents of Irmi, the family knew the risks of being Jew under German regime. They managed to arrange that Etty got their last name, by Royal Decree in 1938, and tried to obtain a statement from her biological mother that the father was not Jewish-so that Etty would be at most half-Jewish. Theodora, however, refused to sign such an explanation. In the 1941-1942 school year, Jewish children were no longer allowed to go to school with other children. That's how Etty came to the Jewish school on the Zijlweg. In August 1942, when the Jewish portions from Haarlem had started, the family considered it safer Etty to accommodate an orphanage, the Jewish orphanage Machseh Lajesoumim in Leiden. But that turned out not to be safe: it was emptied by the Nazis on March 17, 1943. All children went to Westerbork, most of them to Sobibor within a week. For Etty, a feverish attempt has been made to arrange a negative explanation about her Jewish descent and faith, but on April 13 she too was deported to Sobibor, alone and without family or classmates. There she was gassed three days later. Etty's biological mother was married in 1933, to Samuel Vischschraper, and had had two children with him. That family was also murdered in Sobibor, two months after Etty.
