At Raamsingel 18b lived Engelina Lenderink-de Vries and her son Bernardus Jacob “Ben” Lenderink. Engelina, born in Haarlem in 1886, married non-Jewish policeman Bernardus Lenderink in 1913. Together they ran a pottery shop, first on Grote Houtstraat and later on Houtplein. After her husband’s death in 1932, Engelina returned to Haarlem with her sons. She was sent to Vught on 17 July 1943, deported to Auschwitz on 15 November and recorded dead on arrival, 18 November 1943. Ben, born in 1918, joined the resistance under the alias “Flip.” He took part in a raid on the Heemstede police station and was executed by SD men during a failed ammunition-hiding operation in Abbenes on 8 September 1944.
