Summary in English:
Salomon Plaut, born on October 1, 1869, was a butcher who married Frieda Plaut (born December 19, 1877) on October 24, 1900, in Willingshausen. After the November 1938 pogrom, he, as the last chairman of the Jewish community in Ottrau, sold the synagogue—one of the few not destroyed—to the local community.
In mid-October 1941, Salomon and Frieda were the last Jews from Ottrau to be sent to the Jewish nursing home in Frankfurt, at Niederau 25. On August 18, 1942, all Jewish nursing homes in Frankfurt were cleared, and residents were deported to Theresienstadt. Frieda died there on September 4, and Salomon on September 13, due to the inhumane conditions.
Their daughter Rosa Plaut, married to Rudolf Stern, fled to the Netherlands but was later deported to Auschwitz with their two-year-old son, where all three were murdered in November 1943.
Another family member, Thilo David Plaut, managed to escape. He married Charlotte Mugier in Bern on December 19, 1945, and owned a sausage factory in Milan. After the founding of Israel in 1948, he moved there, sold his parents’ house in 1951, and visited Ottrau multiple times. He died on June 20, 1978, in Beit Yitzhak.
