At Lorentzplein 37 lived Abraham Schijveschuurder and his wife Elisa Schijveschuurder-Kahn. Abraham, born in Amsterdam in 1898, became a tailor and owned four English-style clothing shops, including one in Haarlem. He had two sons, Joop and Loek, from his first marriage; after their mother died, Elisa, born in Basel in 1907, became their stepmother. The family moved to Haarlem in 1934 and to Lorentzplein 37 in 1940, partly to be closer to the synagogue. They were active in the Jewish community and briefly sheltered German-Jewish refugee Walter Guttmann. After a failed attempt to escape to Switzerland, Abraham and Elisa went into hiding but were betrayed in March 1944. They were deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz on 5 April 1944. Elisa was murdered on arrival, 8 April 1944. Abraham was used as a forced labourer and died there on 31 August 1944. Joop and Loek survived in hiding.
