Oosterstraat 7 Warffum
Almost every Warffumer knows where Poere Broekema's house can be found. Poere was the nickname of Benjamin Heiman Broekema: butcher, writer, poet, musician, husband of Sara, father of Reina Rachelina and Rachelina Rosa. Benjamin lived with his family at number 7 in the Oosterstraat, number 5 of the house - formerly semidetached - was lived in by his mother Reina Broekema-van Dam. Almost every Warffumer also knows that Pauline Broekema - no family, but the same surname - wrote a beautiful and moving book about the Jewish community in Warffum, with Benjamin as the main character: Benjamin, a silent death. The book is still for sale. Benjamin Broekema was born on August 12, 1904. On July 10, 1942 he had to leave for Westerbork, on July 15 he was deported to Auschwitz, where he was murdered on August 17, 1942. Benjamin's wife, Sara Mina Broekema-van der Klei was born on January 1, 1908. The Broekema couple had two daughters: Reina Rachelina, born April 27, 1936, and Rachelina Rosa, born May 1, 1939. Benjamin's mother Reina Broekema-van Dam, widow of Jozef Broekema, lived next door to the family at number 5. She was born on November 29, 1864. Grandmother, mother and children were sent to Westerbork on November 12, 1942, put on a train to Auschwitz on November 16, and murdered there and on November 19, 1942.
