Diezerstraat 90 Zwolle
When the war breaks out, instrument maker Levie de Leeuw has had a music business in Zwolle for almost 20 years. The business was opened in February 1921 at Diezerplein 39. In the years that followed, the family and shop moved to Melkmarkt 3 (1922), Voorstraat 8 (1928), Diezerstraat 81 (1931) and finally, in 1937, to Diezerstraat 90. Levie sells and repairs musical instruments and trades in sheet music, gramophones and similar items. Both his sons also work in the business, Meijer Levie as an office clerk, Mozes from 1940 as a partner. It is not known whether his wife Aaltje also works in the business. At the beginning of 1942, the business was expropriated and led to liquidation by a (Dutch) agent within a few months. Due to the expropriation of the business, the family has to live on 14 moved to live elsewhere in July 1942; they find shelter with relatives at Nieuwstraat 57. That same month, 22-year-old Meijer Levie marries 25-year-old Dina Bettie Jacobs, a maid by profession. They are also forced to live at Nieuwstraat 57. A National Socialist bookshop is located at Diezerstraat 90. Son Meijer Levie does not respond to the call to appear at Zwolle station on September 1, 1942 for transport to a labor camp near Heerenveen, which means that he arrest hangs in the balance. We do not know whether Meijer Levie and his wife Dina went into hiding, but we do know that they were arrested together in Assen in mid-January 1943 and hence immediately when criminal cases are deported to Westerbork. Ten days later, the young couple is transported to Auschwitz, where Dina is immediately upon arrival murdered, aged 25. Meijer Levie is selected for the labor camp where he can keep working for more than a month. In one of the rare Sterbebücher van Auschwitz, his death is recorded as February 25, 1943; his later Dutch death certificate states 31 January 1943. He was 23 years old. It is likely that the eldest son, Mozes, was also called up for a labor camp and that he did go. Like thousands of other Jewish men, he will be born between October 3 and 5 Brought to Westerbork in 1942. He escapes there after a few days (on October 8), but is arrested in Amsterdam almost three months later (on January 15, 1943). He is detained in camp Vught and at the end of March 1943 he goes to Westerbork as a criminal case. Three months later he is deported to Sobibor, where he is murdered, almost 28 years old. Father Levie and mother Aaltje were not taken from home during the major deportations from Zwolle in early October and mid-November 1942. In mid-October 1942, Levie was sought on suspicion of absconding. Levie is probably arrested in hiding. On 26 November 1942 he arrives in Westerbork together with Aaltje. They are deported to Auschwitz on December 8, 1942. There they die shortly after arrival, aged 52 and 49. Almost the entire family has tried to escape deportation. Going into hiding or not appearing after a call to report for a labor camp or escaping from camp Westerbork – at least they did that. It indicates that they have tried to save the dead body. They didn't just give in.
