The Vos family lived at Simon Stevinweg 4B in Bussum. Daniël Vos, a travelling salesman and children’s author, was married to Betsy Bueno de Mesquita. They had two children, Jacob (Japie) and Letty Mia. Daniël wrote books and articles, but also warned against rising antisemitism. In 1941 he was arrested for resistance work and later imprisoned in Dachau and Allach. While he was away, Betsy and the children were forced to move to Amsterdam. In March 1943 they were taken to Westerbork and then deported to Sobibor, where Betsy, eight-year-old Jacob and six-year-old Letty were murdered on 2 April 1943. Daniël survived the camps and returned after the war, only then learning that his wife and children would never come back.
