Sumatrastraat 3
Enschede
On March 31, 1945, the Canadians were about to capture Enschede, there was already fighting on the outskirts of the city. The resistance was ready to help, including the group around Gerrit ter Borg. We had to wait for instructions. They came from Karl Huschka on that day; via the intermediary Isaacs, he informed Gerrit that the group had to gather that evening for important messages of liberation. Gerrit warned the members of his group that they had to come to his house that evening: Sumatrastraat 3. Not everyone could be on time, but at seven o'clock were present in the house: Gerrit ter Borg, his wife Jonetta, their two-year-old son Gerrit and six resistance members. Gerrit's father and mother happened to be visiting. Eleven-year-old daughter Hannie was playing outside.
It was not a liberation meeting, because there was treason, in fact, the meeting was organized by Huschka to attack the entire resistance group. At about seven o'clock three robberies drove into Sumatrastraat. Under the leadership of the SD chief Schöber, the Germans surrounded the house and penetrated. Grandma Ter Borg hid under the table, the others tried to hide everywhere, up to the attic.
The SD men spread through the house. Anyone they sighted was shot instantly. They hesitated with Jonetta ter Borg and her child. She was allowed to bring her child under the guidance of an SD person. She crossed the street diagonally and put the boy in the arms of her daughter Hannie, who had fled to butcher Amelink. Jonetta's words have been remembered: Here is Gerrit, take good care of him. Your father is dead and I have to go back. She was stopped, but she shouted, "I have to go back or you will all be shot. Then she walked away. Hannie saw her mother fall. Jonetta was dragged home by the SD man. According to Grandma Ter Borg, who was sitting under the table, she sat down at the table and was killed with a shot to the neck. After the massacre, the Germans drove away.
The first person who dared to enter the house was baker de Jong, who had a shop nearby. There were dead bodies all over the house. A fire grenade from a hand grenade started in the attic; he managed to extinguish it. One of the victims was still alive, but died on the way to the hospital. Grandma Ter Borg survived the murder: they had not discovered her under the table.
The victims were: Gerrit ter Borg, his wife Jonetta ter Borg-Elfering, his father Gerard ter Borg, Piet Zandbergen, Wieger Mink, Tonny van Essen, Gerard Rutgers, Johannes Francoijs. J.H. Bosch. Hennie Wennink of the same resistance group was shot dead by the SD on the Zweeringweg on the same evening.
The next day, Enschede was liberated by the Allies.
