At Westerhoutpark 14 in Haarlem several Jewish children who had taken refuge from Nazi persecution were sheltered by the Quaker couple Manfred and Lili Pollatz, who ran a home and school there. Among those commemorated with Stolpersteine are:
Hanns Alexander Katzenstein (born 30 Sep 1924, Berlin) was brought to this address in 1936 at age 11. He trained as a shoemaker and helped support the home. Later conscripted for forced labour in the Organisation Todt, he was arrested in IJmuiden in July 1944, held in Kamp Amersfoort and Westerbork, deported on 13 Sep 1944 to Bergen-Belsen, and then sent to Buchenwald’s Langenstein-Zwieberge camp where he died on 1 Feb 1945 at age 20.
Klaus Gurau (born 12 Jul 1925, Chemnitz) stayed at Westerhoutpark with the Pollatz family. In August 1942 he was arrested in Amsterdam for not wearing the Jewish star, deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz, and murdered there on 5 Sep 1942 at age 17.
Margot Kohn (born 16 Nov 1927, Berlin) came to the Pollatz home as a refugee girl. In November 1941 she and her family were deported from Berlin to a killing site near Riga, where she and her relatives were murdered on 30 Nov 1941 at age 14.
