At Kanariestraat 5 in Haarlem lived the Jewish couple Peres “Piet” de Vries and Hanna (Anna) de Vries-Posner, commemorated with a Stolperstein. Peres (born 10 Nov 1888) was the son of Benjamin Abraham de Vries and Susanna Dondorp. He married Hanna Posner in 1913, and they had six children: Suzanna, Isidoor, Greta, Benjamin, Louis, and Leo (who died in infancy). The family lived at several addresses before moving to Kanariestraat in 1939. Peres was a freethinker, socialist activist, and worked as a collector for a local business. During WWII, the family received notices to report for forced labor; Peres and his sons initially went into hiding, and later Hanna and Greta also went into hiding. However, on 15 January 1944 Peres and Hanna were arrested and sent to Westerbork, then deported on 25 January 1944 to Auschwitz, where they were murdered on 28 January 1944. Their children survived the war thanks in part to help from relatives and resistance contacts.
