Maurits Weill (1870, Haarlem), son of shopkeepers Nico Weill and Rosalie Emrik, trained as a confectioner, likely in New York. In 1904 he opened Patisserie Américaine at Waterlooplein in Amsterdam, later returning to Haarlem. He married Helena de Vries (1880, Deventer) in 1906. From the 1920s they lived in Haarlem, last at Eindenhoutstraat 45. In August 1942 Maurits was among the first Jews from Haarlem deported to Westerbork; his house was seized and looted. Helena, in fragile health, stayed in Amsterdam with relatives and received medical care until her deportation. In February 1943 she too was sent to Westerbork, then to Auschwitz, where she was murdered. Maurits also perished in Auschwitz. Both came from large Jewish families of merchants and professionals, most of whom did not survive the Shoah.
